Compare temperature and flow outside the shower first

The wall-access question belongs in the estimate
Access may be through the trim opening or the wall behind the valve. Ask what is known before finish removal and how waterproofing will be protected.
Cartridge service may be possible from the finished side, but a damaged valve body, inaccessible connection, incompatible part, or piping alteration can require a larger opening. Ask the provider to identify the valve before promising a repair and to explain the initial access route. If tile, a back wall, an access panel, or shower enclosure may be affected, name who removes, protects, and restores each material. Agree on the condition that would justify expanding the opening. Plumbing price should not silently assume that matching tile or paint is available. For valve replacement, confirm the selected control function, trim compatibility, pressure or temperature protection, piping connections, support, approval requirements, and inspection visibility before the wall closes. Keep product documents and photographs of concealed work with the property record.
Do not test through an unsafe temperature swing
Avoid scalding tests and keep children away from unstable temperatures. Do not remove trim or cartridges unless the water can be safely isolated and the work is appropriate.
Final testing should include the uncomfortable edge cases
After work, test hot and cold transitions gradually, confirm stable shutoff, and observe both the shower outlet and any tub spout. Measure delivered temperature with an appropriate method rather than relying only on how it feels, and follow manufacturer and code requirements. Check the wall plate, spout, shower arm, and accessible area behind the valve for leakage while water runs and after it stops. If the original complaint occurred when another fixture operated, reproduce that condition carefully only when safe. Ask how the limit stop was set and keep the model instructions. A new cartridge can change handle position or temperature behavior, so everyone using the shower should understand the controls. Do not close an access opening until leak testing and any required inspection are complete, and do not treat an improved spray pattern as proof that the valve body is dry.
If the shower is used by someone who cannot react quickly to temperature changes, tell the provider that functional need before selecting controls or setting limits. The final demonstration should be understandable to the actual users. Do not promise protection from every temperature event based only on a new trim plate or cartridge; verify the installed valve's function and manufacturer settings.
