Do not put alarm codes, lock details, or travel dates in a public form or shared website. Discuss vacancy procedures with the relevant equipment manufacturer, insurer, property manager, and qualified provider as applicable. Turning water or heat off can affect appliances, fire protection, treatment systems, and other equipment, so a generic checklist should not override those requirements. Ask what should remain operating, how the property will be checked, and what condition would require a visit. The best plan is one another responsible person can follow without guessing at unfamiliar controls.

Do not use flame or improvised high heat to thaw a pipe. If a provider thaws a section, ask how it will be monitored as flow and pressure return and how adjacent fittings will be checked. A pipe can appear intact while frozen and leak afterward. Record the affected fixtures and indoor conditions so prevention work can address the actual exposure. Keep insulation or finish restoration separate from the immediate plumbing repair, and do not close access before testing and any required inspection. Update the winter plan with what was learned rather than repeating a checklist that did not protect the vulnerable section.
