Build a valve map while the system is quiet
Photograph accessible valves and the piping around them. Note missing labels, corrosion, blocked access, or a handle that already appears damaged.
Use reliable labels, property documents, and professional identification to distinguish a fixture stop, appliance supply valve, branch control, building main, meter assembly, and utility-owned control. Photograph each accessible valve with enough surrounding piping to show location. Write the room, what it is confirmed to serve, who identified it, and whether there is a safe dry route to it. Do not label a valve by guessing from its size or handle color. A main that is behind stored items, a locked room, or a heavy appliance may be functionally inaccessible during a leak. Correct ordinary access obstacles when the area is dry, but do not move equipment or operate an unknown valve just to finish a map. Utility-owned or sealed controls should remain with the responsible authority.
A control serving more than one dwelling or a system with fire protection should never be treated as an ordinary single-fixture stop. Ask the responsible owner and qualified professional to identify the consequences of closure and any required notice. Include that limitation on the private valve map so a future occupant does not interrupt a critical or shared service during an unrelated leak.

Condition and function are separate checks

A handle can look sound while the valve does not fully isolate water, and a valve that once worked can corrode or seize over time. Ask a qualified provider to identify the valve and plan a controlled functional test with a backup isolation route. Do not force a painted, damaged, leaking, or unfamiliar control. The test should account for appliances and equipment that may be affected by a shutdown, the possibility that the valve will need replacement, and any utility involvement. If replacement is proposed, clarify how water will be stopped, whether the entire building is affected, what material and connections are planned, and whether current permit or inspection requirements apply. A valve test is a useful scheduled task, not something to improvise for the first time while water is spreading.

Leave clear instructions for the next person

Record whether the valve was actually tested, when it was tested, and what limitations remain. If the work involved a building-wide interruption, confirm that affected fixtures and equipment were returned to their proper operating condition. Share the map with the person responsible for the property during travel, while keeping access codes and security information outside publicly shared notes.
