Preserve the connection as you found it
Photograph the dry area around the leak as well as the wet spot. If visible, capture markings and nearby connections without scraping or cleaning them first.
Photograph the pipe from far enough away to show its route, then capture the first returning drop after the area is dried only if drying can be done safely. Record whether moisture begins at a threaded connection, soldered joint, valve stem, flexible connector, straight section, or a point hidden by insulation. Describe color, printed markings, corrosion, mineral residue, and support without assigning a material from appearance alone. Do not polish the pipe or tighten a nut before a provider sees the condition. A small movement can worsen a brittle connection and erase the trail that showed where water began. Note whether the pipe carries hot water, cold water, drainage, or an unknown service based on actual use or labels. If the line is continuously wet while fixtures are idle, include that fact at the beginning of the call.

Leave tightening and temporary patching to a confirmed scope
Do not tighten, cut, tape, or disturb a questionable pipe when the material or system is unknown. Avoid hot surfaces and energized equipment.
A spot repair and a condition review answer different needs
Ask whether the proposed work is a localized repair or whether adjacent condition and support will be checked. Clarify testing before finishes are closed.
One confirmed failed joint may justify a defined local repair. Repeated pinholes, broad corrosion, unsupported runs, freeze exposure, or several repairs in a short section may lead to a wider condition discussion. Ask the provider to separate what is visibly failed from what is only suspected and what evidence supports replacing additional pipe. Material compatibility, transitions, support, access, and the condition of nearby valves can affect the plan. A recommendation to replace a branch should name its endpoints and the fixtures it serves. It should also state what remains outside the scope. Avoid promises based on pipe color, building age, or a single photograph. If sampling or environmental precautions are relevant to the material encountered, ask who is qualified to handle them before the area is disturbed.
Isolation can interrupt more than the fixture nearest the leak. Ask which rooms, appliances, or occupied units share the affected branch and how the shutdown will be communicated. In a managed building, coordinate with the responsible owner before a common line is taken out of service. Record any equipment that needs a qualified restart after water returns instead of assuming every system can simply be left on.
Testing must happen under the condition that produced the drip
After repair, the provider should restore the line in a controlled way and observe the new joints as pressure and temperature change. A hot-water connection may need time to expand; a drain section needs the fixture use that originally produced leakage; an appliance line may require its operating cycle. Ask which test was performed, how long it was observed, and whether adjacent visible connections remained dry. If the pipe disappears behind a wall, keep the opening accessible until the agreed test and any required inspection are complete. Record the new material, transition fittings, shutoff used, and limits of the repaired section. If water had reached finishes, do not close the cavity simply because the pipe test passed. Drying and material-condition decisions remain separate from the plumbing result.
