Follow the first outdoor use inside
Start outdoors at spigots, then check basement or lower-level areas, under sinks, around toilets, at the water heater, and beside visible appliance connections. Keep photographs dated.
When outdoor water is used for the first time after winter, have someone observe the accessible interior wall or basement area opposite the faucet from a dry position. Note whether moisture appears only while the faucet runs, at the exterior handle, or around a hose connection. Stop use if water shows inside. Do not force a seized fitting or pull on the mounted faucet. Then look at basement and lower-level surfaces that were damp during thaw or rain and compare them with prior photographs. Snowmelt, groundwater, roof drainage, condensation, and plumbing can produce overlapping marks, so record weather and fixture use separately. A spring check should identify a changed condition, not label every seasonal stain as a pipe failure. Keep the observations tied to the exact place and event.
Photograph old stain boundaries before cleaning, repainting, or moving storage back against the wall. A dry mark may remain from a resolved event, while a fresh edge after the same weather pattern deserves follow-up. The distinction prevents cosmetic work from hiding a useful reference and avoids reopening a past plumbing repair merely because its old discoloration is still visible.
Compare new marks with last season's photographs

- meter movement during a confirmed no-use period
Indoor checks work best as a repeatable route
Move through under-sink cabinets, toilet bases and tanks, laundry connections, dishwasher edges, refrigerator line areas that are visible without moving the appliance, and the water-heater space. Look for a new mineral trail, damp base, changed hose shape, corrosion, or recurring toilet refill. Use the same camera angle as earlier checks where possible. Do not remove panels, operate questionable valves, or disturb electrical connections to inspect more deeply. Compare recent water use with similar occupancy and outdoor conditions instead of treating a larger bill as proof of leakage. Mark each finding as new, unchanged, resolved, or needing a qualified inspection.
Keep the review visual and accessible
Do not enter wet electrical areas, move heavy appliances, or open concealed spaces. A spring check is observational.
Turn the list into separate, answerable jobs
If a clue repeats, call with the location, timing, and comparison photo. That is more useful than waiting for a larger stain or assuming winter damage.
