Active water leak? Start with safety and location.

A moving leak changes by the minute. First note whether the stream, drip, or spread is increasing and which surfaces are below it.

Electricity, ceiling movement, and fast spread end the inspection

Do not stand in water to reach a switch or valve. Leave a bulging ceiling alone and keep others out from below it.

Use the moving edge as your clock

Watch from the dry edge and trace upward only where the path is visible. A larger puddle may be downhill from the first failure.

Look for the newest edge of the water from a stable, dry position. A pencil mark on removable tape, a photograph, and the time can show whether a ceiling stain or floor puddle is growing without putting anyone beneath it. Note whether the flow is a mist, stream, repeated drop, or occasional release. Then connect it to one recent action, such as a toilet refill, shower, washer cycle, or no water use at all. Do not keep operating fixtures to improve the observation. If the edge grows while everything is idle, say that immediately. If it stops with one fixture out of use, preserve that fact without treating it as proof of the failed part. The record should also show rooms below, water approaching a wall opening, and anything vulnerable in the path. Those details tell a provider how much isolation and access may be needed before diagnosis starts.

Record flow, spread, and the action that changes them

  • room and level where water first appears
  • steady flow, pulse, drip, or only during fixture use
  • nearby electricity, heat, stored items, and finished surfaces

Containment has a narrow purpose

If a known shutoff is safely reachable, tell the provider whether closing it changed the leak. If not, say that clearly rather than testing unfamiliar valves.

A pan or towel may protect a dry, reachable surface from a small drip, but containment is not an invitation to work beneath a swollen ceiling or near electrical equipment. Do not climb to catch water above your head, puncture a ceiling, move a heavy wet appliance, or create a path that sends water toward a floor opening. Move people, pets, and ordinary belongings away only when the route is dry and stable. If a familiar fixture stop or clearly identified building shutoff is easy to reach, describe its condition before deciding whether it can be used safely. Never force a corroded handle or experiment with a valve whose function is unknown. Tell the provider exactly what remains on, what has been turned off, and whether the visible flow changed. A temporary reduction in water does not establish that concealed materials are dry or that the damaged connection is safe to reuse.

The repair record should follow the water path

After the immediate flow is controlled, the next questions concern source, access, and recovery. Ask what test identified the supply, drain, fixture, or equipment connection and whether the original condition can be recreated safely for a final check. If drywall, a cabinet back, flooring, or insulation must be opened, request the starting location and the evidence that would justify expanding it. Plumbing repair, water removal, structural drying, environmental assessment, and finish restoration may belong to different scopes. Identify who owns each step and whether the area must remain open for inspection or drying. The written result should describe the section repaired, materials installed, valves or fixtures left off, and the test performed before water was restored. Keep photographs and moisture or drying records separately from the plumbing invoice so a stopped leak is not mistaken for a fully restored room.
